I feel really dumb for asking this (because I’m almost convinced it’s a scam), but I just wish it wasn’t! Can anyone verify that it is?

This is the email I received from the vendor:

The car is still available and the price for 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid is $3,800. I’m selling it to pay for an investment and the low price is for a fast deal. As a former Honda employee, I had access to the Honda Employee Store and I bought the car for a very low price. That’s why I can afford to sell it so cheap now.
It doesn’t have any dents, chips or scratches and the interior is great. The car has nothing wrong, 88,000 miles, the engine runs perfect and clean. It comes with a clear title, no liens or loans, no monthly payments and it has never been in an accident.
I was recently promoted and had to move to the UK. I’m located in London and the car is in New York. I have made all the arrangements and the car is already in a shipping container. The shipping is free within the US and the car is delivered at your home in 3-5 days, depending on your location.
I decided to secure this sale using eBay because it protects both buyer and seller and they act as a third party in our deal. They hold the money until you receive the car and decide to keep it or not. You have 7 days to inspect the car and the documents and I get paid after you make sure everything is as described and agree to release the payment.
If you don’t like the car and want to return it, I will arrange to ship it back (on my costs) and you will be 100% refunded by ebay. I’m sure you will love the car and will not want to return it but it’s good to know that you have this option available..
If you have the funds available and want to buy the car, I need your full name and the delivery address to inform ebay about this sale and receive the payment details from them as soon as possible.

Many thanks
John Doe

PS: Here is the VIN# JHMFA362X6S024139, if you want to run a Carfax report.

A friend of ours uses Craigslist to look for “things left on the curb”. One day she saw an ad for a job, $500 up front, and then $500 a week to clean this persons house. He was living in the UK (Scotland) with his wife, and was moving back to the US. He wanted someone to clean the house before they moved in, and then every week after that. He was going to send a check for $5,000 (yes $5,000) to her for cleaning supplies. She was to cash the check ($5,000), take out $500 and then send the rest to another address. She asked this person several times what part of Scotland as my husband is from there…he never answered.
Two weeks later she received a UPS package that had the $5,000 check in it. Thankfully she called the bank on the check (which was a real bank in Alabama) and found out that the check was fake.

If something sounds “to good to be true”…then it probably is.

    Definitely a scam

    1) He’s selling the car for way less than it is worth.

    2) The car is already in a shipping container, and the seller is willing to pay for shipping and return shipping.

    3) Ebay does not hold money until you receive the car and inspect it, and they do not refund your money. That is up to the seller. Besides, you should never give a seller money for a car you have never even seen.

This deal looks too good to be true, and you know what they say about things that look that way. The seller could even be giving you a VIN for another car so the Carfax report will come back clean. I strongly suggest that you stick to looking at vehicles within 20 or 30 miles of your house. Any listing on Craigslist where the seller offers to ship a car is almost definitely a scam.

I am currently looking into buying a car also and craigslist is my main method of searching..I ran into an EXACT similar scenario as you. I found a 350z for a fraction of what the retail should be..I was very skeptical so my girlfriend did some research..by the book this is what they do they make up some phony scenario about being in the UK and shipping the car and ebay holds ur money while you inspect the car. I had the same exact scenario happen..DO NOT DO THIS… Also to prove this is even more of a scam is I also contacted Ebay to see if they actually do outside transactions like this and they contacted me with exactly what i had expected..Ebay DOES NOT cover outside transactions and that this is a scam and so on and so forth….just go on google and type in craigslist scams and you will find all this information

hope this was helpful and good luck
